Cana (KAY-nuh) is a PhD candidate in Historical Musicology. She is broadly interested in understanding how ideas about listenership foster ways of attuning to multispecies relationships and more-than-human nature. Her dissertation explores this terrain by considering several musical and sonic encounters among plants and humans, with case studies that range from representations of botanical scents in 19th-century French art song; ambient electronic music; and plant-themed audiovisual digital media. Her research has been generously supported by the Center for European Studies and the Mahindra Humanities Center. Before serving as the departmental HGSU rep, Cana chaired the GMF from 2021-22 and co-coordinated the GMF Conference in the 2020-21 academic year. Outside of her life as a scholar, Cana also enjoys long distance running, choral singing, and freestyling plant-based recipes.
